Lunar new year

Happy lunar new year! Hope everyone celebrating it was able to eat some good food and connect with loved ones (hopefully safely!). This year’s new year eve (February 11th) crept up on one of my busiest weeks of this semester so far. I didn’t have any special celebrations, but my house did get some good (authentic) Chinese takeout! Yum, because while I am Chinese, my cooking skills do not reflect well on Chinese dishes. I am also a huge dessert gal. This year I did not get to enjoy any of my favourite Asian desserts, but not a problem – I drew them out, and I will be justifying this by telling myself that I need to cut back on sweets. The dumplings were just extra because they are so fun to draw.

An brief introduction:

  • Tang yuan are glutinous rice flour balls, usually with a sweet black sesame, red bean, or peanut filling. They are similar to mochi but they are typically served hot in a light, sweet broth.
  • Sesame balls are once again made with a glutinous rice flour, covered in sesame seeds, and deep fried. The filling I learned to love and adore is red bean. This treat hits a nostalgic spot for me because they were my number one favourite dessert growing up!
  • And speaking of nostalgia, the eight treasure rice (very loose translation – I apologize to any native Chinese speakers) holds a special spot in my heart. I have fond memories of my grandparents making these for me. My dear, sweet grandma also puts a pretty display of toppings in concentric patterns – so cute!
  • As you can see, a pretty obvious pattern is emerging here. I love anything made with glutinous rice flour and has a sweet red bean filling – haha!

Lao Gan Ma is a really good chili sauce from China. There’s a video of John Cena confessing his love for it. Hahaha. If you google the sauce, you can even buy Lao Gan Ma merch. 😲

Feast your eyes

Dim sum has a special place in my heart, especially those from Cantonese dim sum restaurants back in Vancouver. My family is from Shanghai, so our version of dim sum is a little different from popular dim sum foods in North America. My mom hates going to the restaurants because they were so loud. I mean how can they not be? Just imagine waking up on a Saturday morning and grabbing har gow (the best dim sum) with close family and friends. There is a lot of excitement, and I am one for it.

So maybe the fact that I rarely ate dim sum made me love dim sum even more. Being in Kingston sort of sucks for me because dim sum here falls very short compared to the ones back home. That doesn’t stop me from drawing them. If I can’t eat them, at least I can look at them and imagine myself eating it? 🤪

These har gow (crystal shrimp dumplings) are my favorite. I don’t even know how they get shrimps that big.

These chicken or pork sticky rice wrapped in some kind of leaf (so I am not the best at remembering the actual names) was one of my favourite dim sum foods growing up. Even though I don’t eat chicken or pork anymore, they still hold a special place in my heart.

 

Feast your eyes. Googling “dim sum” is another great way to feast your eyes. You might get some serious cravings though. You have been warned! 🤤

The Perfect Combo

When your sandwich is perfect…Ahhh..It’s priceless.

It has been a while since I posted. There’s no excuse but during the time that I was gone, I did many things. One of them being perfecting the best sandwich combinations…At least to me they are, keep in mind I am no masterchef (shocking). Here are 2 of my favourites as of now. Give them a try. They packed with flavour because your girl hates bland food.

Not your average 🌚 savory sandwich:

  • thick italian white bread
  • generous avocado hummus or regular
  • 2 pickle slices
  • a handful of alfalfa sprouts
  • pan fried crispy tofu or smoked tofu
  • 4 tomato slices and 4 cucumbers slices

Gourmet 🥂 pb and jelly combo:

  • whole wheat bread
  • chucky peanut butter
  • lots of grape jelly
  • toasted coconut chips
